Myers Park Shuts Out Country Day

This game was never really even in doubt. Myers Park’s powerful offense and smothering defense plagued Country Day all night. The Buccaneers were able to stop the Mustangs on their first drive, but it did not take Myers Park long to get going. Khamal Howard got the first points on the board with a one-yard touchdown run. Myers Park would score again on their next drive when Brayden Edwards hit Muhsin Muhammad – son of the former Panthers and Bears wide receiver – for a six-yard touchdown pass.

Kicker Tyler Dameron would add to the lead in the second quarter with a 29-yard field goal. Howard would add another touchdown before half-time with a three-yard touchdown run. The Buccaneers would appeared to catch a break late in the second quarter when Muhammad muffed a punt. The Country Day players thought they had it, but the officials ruled that the Mustangs recovered.

In the second half, the Buccaneers defense stiffened. They did have a few highlights in the second half. Twan Flip took the opening kickoff 59 yards from the Bucs’ one-yard line to the Myers Park 40. That seemed to ignite the Bucs. But mistakes would stymie the Country Day offense. After getting a first down to the Mustang 30, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty backed them up. They were unable to capitalize on the momentum.

Country Day was able to force two Myers Park turnovers, but that would not be enough. In the fourth quarter, the Mustangs put one final touchdown on the board when Edwards hit Emanuel Alston for a nine-yard touchdown. Tyler Dameron was 4-for-4 on extra point kicks. Myers Park preserved the shutout 31-0.
