Costly Mistakes Plague Olympic In Loss To Providence Day

The Providence Day Chargers got off to a fast start against the Olympic Trojans. Osita Ekwonu got the first points on the board with a seven yard touchdown run. Thomas Gelorme’s extra point kick made it 7-0. The Chargers added to their lead when Nickel Fields intercepted a pass from Trojan quarterback Dylan Earney and returned it 59 yards for a touchdown. The extra point kick was missed so the score remained 13-0. Olympic made another costly mistake in the first quarter when running-back Damon Rouse fumbled the ball in the red zone.

The Trojans did come to life, however. Dylan Earney connected with Jamik Edmunds on two long touchdown passes. The first was from 69 yards and the second was from 64 yards. Both extra points by Kolby Schefers were good so the Trojans took a 14-13 lead. The Chargers struck back with a two-yard touchdown pass from Cody Cater to Porter Rooks. Cater connected with Chad Ayers on the two-point conversion to make it 21-14. Thomas Gelorme added to the lead with a 34-yard field goal.

Olympic made another critical mistake on a bad snap that left the punter trying to recover, but his knee was down while doing so. That gave Providence Day good field position. They ended up settling for another Gelorme field-goal from 36 yards out. It was 27-14 at half-time.

The Trojans would cut the lead early in the third quarter with a Damon Rouse 34-yard touchdown run. The extra point kick failed however. But each time the Trojans got close, the Chargers shut the door. Quarterback Cody Cater and Nickel Fields connected for a seven-yard touchdown score.

Olympic’s Shamar Winborne would close the gap with an eight-yard touchdown, but once again the extra point was no good. Another costly mistake doomed Olympic, though. The punter tried to compensate for a badly snapped punt but inadvertently downed it at the one-yard line. A one yard loss on the next play and a false start backed Providence Day to the seven-yard line. But that didn’t prevent Cater from connecting with Carter Dowling for a touchdown pass that put the nail in the coffin. Gelorme was 3-for-4 on extra points and was 2-for-2 on field goal tries. That made the final 41-26.
