Myers Park Shuts Out Country Day

This game was never really even in doubt. Myers Park’s powerful offense and smothering defense plagued Country Day all night. The Buccaneers were able to stop the Mustangs on their first drive, but it did not take Myers Park long to get going. Khamal Howard got the first points on the board with a one-yard touchdown run. Myers Park would score again on their next drive when Brayden Edwards hit Muhsin Muhammad – son of the former Panthers and Bears wide receiver – for a six-yard touchdown pass.

Kicker Tyler Dameron would add to the lead in the second quarter with a 29-yard field goal. Howard would add another touchdown before half-time with a three-yard touchdown run. The Buccaneers would appeared to catch a break late in the second quarter when Muhammad muffed a punt. The Country Day players thought they had it, but the officials ruled that the Mustangs recovered.

In the second half, the Buccaneers defense stiffened. They did have a few highlights in the second half. Twan Flip took the opening kickoff 59 yards from the Bucs’ one-yard line to the Myers Park 40. That seemed to ignite the Bucs. But mistakes would stymie the Country Day offense. After getting a first down to the Mustang 30, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty backed them up. They were unable to capitalize on the momentum.

Country Day was able to force two Myers Park turnovers, but that would not be enough. In the fourth quarter, the Mustangs put one final touchdown on the board when Edwards hit Emanuel Alston for a nine-yard touchdown. Tyler Dameron was 4-for-4 on extra point kicks. Myers Park preserved the shutout 31-0.

Costly Mistakes Plague Olympic In Loss To Providence Day

The Providence Day Chargers got off to a fast start against the Olympic Trojans. Osita Ekwonu got the first points on the board with a seven yard touchdown run. Thomas Gelorme’s extra point kick made it 7-0. The Chargers added to their lead when Nickel Fields intercepted a pass from Trojan quarterback Dylan Earney and returned it 59 yards for a touchdown. The extra point kick was missed so the score remained 13-0. Olympic made another costly mistake in the first quarter when running-back Damon Rouse fumbled the ball in the red zone.

The Trojans did come to life, however. Dylan Earney connected with Jamik Edmunds on two long touchdown passes. The first was from 69 yards and the second was from 64 yards. Both extra points by Kolby Schefers were good so the Trojans took a 14-13 lead. The Chargers struck back with a two-yard touchdown pass from Cody Cater to Porter Rooks. Cater connected with Chad Ayers on the two-point conversion to make it 21-14. Thomas Gelorme added to the lead with a 34-yard field goal.

Olympic made another critical mistake on a bad snap that left the punter trying to recover, but his knee was down while doing so. That gave Providence Day good field position. They ended up settling for another Gelorme field-goal from 36 yards out. It was 27-14 at half-time.

The Trojans would cut the lead early in the third quarter with a Damon Rouse 34-yard touchdown run. The extra point kick failed however. But each time the Trojans got close, the Chargers shut the door. Quarterback Cody Cater and Nickel Fields connected for a seven-yard touchdown score.

Olympic’s Shamar Winborne would close the gap with an eight-yard touchdown, but once again the extra point was no good. Another costly mistake doomed Olympic, though. The punter tried to compensate for a badly snapped punt but inadvertently downed it at the one-yard line. A one yard loss on the next play and a false start backed Providence Day to the seven-yard line. But that didn’t prevent Cater from connecting with Carter Dowling for a touchdown pass that put the nail in the coffin. Gelorme was 3-for-4 on extra points and was 2-for-2 on field goal tries. That made the final 41-26.

West Mecklenburg Dominates Vance

It was not how the Vance Cougars wanted to open the season. They found themselves in a 28-7 hole in the first quarter alone. It would be the Browns doing the damage early (no, not the Cleveland Browns). Dyami Brown and Preston Brown each put up two touchdowns. Preston Brown threw two touchdown pass to Tyler Barnes (15 yards and 33 yards) and Dyami Brown rushed for two touchdowns (12 and 11 yards). Kalen Clark got Vance’s only touchdown in the first quarter with a 12-yard touchdown run.

Vance would recover two West Mecklenburg fumbles and would stop the bleeding in the second quarter. The Cougars cut the lead to 28-13 midway through the second quarter but it was not enough to save the day for Vance. The Hawks extended their lead in the third quarter with another touchdown run by Dyami Brown. This time it was from three yards out. The other Brown, Preston, would put the game out of reach with a two-yard pass to Joshua Hudson. Christian Alvarez was 6-for-6 on his extra point kicks.

The Cougars did score an oh-by-the-touchdown as the buzzer sounded when quarterback Nigel Summerville hit Jaylon Riley for a 28-yard touchdown pass. That made the final 42-19 in favor of West Mecklenburg.

Jaguars Defense Forces Five Turnovers In Narrow Win Over East Lincoln

It was the kind of game you would expect in the heat of August. Both Forestview and East Lincoln took the field for the first time this year. Both teams seemed to show the first game jitters. Both teams were plagued with turnovers in the first half. The Mustangs would be the first to turn it over. A fumble on the exchange between quarterback Chase Jones and RB Christian Parks and an interception from Jones to Forestview’s Aveon Reid gave the Jaguars opportunities.

The Jaguars were unable to take advantage as they weren’t able to muster much offense. The Mustang defense shut down everything the Jaguars were trying to do. East Lincoln was able to get on the board first with a 76-yard touchdown run by Christian Parks. The two-point conversion failed, however. Forestview would soon start being plagued with turnovers as well. Aveon Reid would muff a Forestview punt and Aaron Bennett fumbled just inside Mustang territory.

With the Jaguar offense struggling, it was up to the defense to make something happen and they did. East Lincoln quarterback Chase Jones attempted a screen pass but it was read perfectly by Cameron Jackson who intercepted it and took it 40 yards for a touchdown. Holt Cloninger’s extra point gave the Jaguars the 7-6 lead in the second quarter. Forestview was in position to extend their lead before the half, but Holt Cloninger’s field-goal was blocked.

The second half would be a stalemate. The Mustangs got into Forestview’s red zone in the third quarter but were stopped on fourth down. The turnover battle continued as the Jaguars would fumble at midfield in the fourth quarter. The Mustangs would squander another chance to take the lead as new quarterback Justin Barnett was intercepted by Jason Young in the end zone. They would stop Forestview’s drive with a minute left in the game. But Barnett threw his second interception. Jackson Moore would return it deep into Mustang territory near the 30. A scuffle would break out that saw one player from each team removed from the game. That was a total of five turnovers for the Mustangs (four interceptions and a fumble). The Jaguars had a total of three (all fumbles).

Forestview will travel to Clover, SC next week. The Blue Eagles rolled Ashbrook 56-26. East Lincoln will be off next week then will host Ashbrook the week after.

Gaston County Jamboree 2017 Results

Stuart Cramer 7 – East Lincoln 0: It was a stalemate most of the game between the two. But late in the second quarter, the Storm broke through with a one-yard touchdown run by Kaiser Kayton to break the stalemate. Devin Baldwin’s kick made it 7-0. That would be the only score in the game as these two capped out the night at Stuart Cramer’s stadium.

Hunter Huss 14 – North Lincoln 0 (1 quarter): With Hunter Huss’s opponent for the Jamboree backing out, the Huskies were looking for someone to play in their place. North Lincoln agreed to play one quarter with the Huskies after their scrimmage with North Gaston. The Huskies moved the ball with ease and the Knights could not get anything going. Kendall Corry got the Huskies on the board with a six-yard touchdown run. The Huskies extended the lead with a 51-yard touchdown pass from Zo Wallace to Saveon Falls. Trevor Hargett was 2-for-2 with his extra points.

North Gaston 21 – North Lincoln 16: It was a battle of the North. In this match-up, it was North Lincoln who struck first. The Knights got on the board quickly with a Reed McRorie 89-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Holley. They went for two on the conversion but failed. The Wildcats struck back with a 14-yard run by Qavius Chambers. Michael Chafin’s kick gave the Wildcats the 7-6 lead. The Knights took the lead back with a two-yard touchdown pass from McRorie to Ryan Dolan. Christian Delaney’s extra point made it 13-7. Delaney extended the lead with a 23-yard field goal. But the Wildcats took the game over with a 27-yard touchdown run by Isaiah McNeil and a 67-yard run by Kareem Kennedy. Chafin was 3-for-3 on his extra points.

Porter Ridge 14 – Ashbrook 6: This game had multiple turnovers by both teams. But in the end, it was the Pirates who escaped with the victory. William Kilgo got the Pirates on the board first with a five-yard touchdown run. Jared Wheatley’s extra point made the score 7-0. The Green Wave answered that with a score of their own. A 37-yard run by Hayden Welle cut the lead to 7-6. The two-point conversion failed, however. Kirkland Harris would add to the Pirates’ lead with an 11-yard run. Wheatley would go 2-for-2 on his extra point kicks.

Carolina Pride 21 – Highland Tech 6: It was a tough outing for the Rams as they were down 14-0 midway through the first quarter. The Rams got on the board with a touchdown run by Bryson Law. But that would be the only score the Rams could muster up as they fell in the opening game.
