It was a tail of two halves. In the first half, neither defense could stop the other team’s offense. In the second half, neither offense could get going. Crest led 21-14 at half-time and came away with a 21-17 victory after it was all said and done.
Jalen Moore scored all three of Crest’s touchdowns. His first score was a short pass from P.J. Brooks in which he took 65 yards for a touchdown. He then scored on runs of four and three. Burns though punched first when quarterback Chris Montgomery hit Denzel Gullatte for a 15-yard touchdown pass.
After Crest tied the game with Moore’s 65-yard touchdown reception, Burns retook the lead with a Montgomery 16-yard rush for a touchdown. It was 14-7 right then, but that would be the last time the Bulldogs took the lead.
Late in the fourth quarter, turnovers doomed Burns. Montgomery was intercepted on a deep pass by Jordan Oakes. With less than three minutes to go, was picked off again by Omar Brooks with a one-handed tipped interception.
“Both teams played hard and both teams played clean.” Burns head coach Matt Beam said “We had trouble stopping them early on but didn’t let them get much in the second half. But we had two picks. Hats off to Crest!”
“We’re going to get better. We’re going to go back to practice. That’s all we can do.”
“We beat a good team. They’re a quality team.” Crest head coach Mark Barnes said “It surprised a lot of people but not us. Got to give our players a lot of credit.”
“People got to give our defense credit. Everybody’s been down on our defense all year long. They only gave up 17 points tonight. We knew it was in them.”
Crest wraps up a share of the SMAC 3A-2A conference title with the win. They can win it outright with a win at cross-town rival, Shelby, next week. If they lose and Burns beats R-S Central at home, then it would be a 3-way tie for the SMAC conference title.
Tale of Two Halves? Sounds like it was a great game!
